Channel NewsAsia reported that the winners from the National STEM Championship showcased projects with significant real-world application potential. The article included a quote from SUTD lecturer Dr Xue Hansong, who was also one of the judges.
The National STEM Championship (NSTEMC), organized by Science Centre Singapore since 2014, focuses on fostering innovation in STEM among secondary students. This year’s winners designed an autonomous delivery robot for transporting supplies. Tew Gun Rui from NUS High School highlighted its potential for various uses, including food and medication delivery.
This year’s competition emphasized creativity, teamwork, and communication skills alongside technical knowledge. NUS High School won, with Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) and River Valley High School as runners-up. Participants faced challenges like budget management, showcasing their resourcefulness while applying scientific concepts. Projects included energy-efficient designs and earthquake-resistant systems, emphasizing sustainability.
“The winning teams chose energy-efficiency related projects,” observed Professor Xue Hansong, a lecturer at Singapore University of Technology & Design (SUTD), and one of the judges. “This reflects a growing recognition of the importance of sustainable practices in preserving the environment.”
