Richmond could be considered a Singapore heartlander and did his undergraduate in chemistry, B(Appl)Sc, at the National University of Singapore which his honours was advised by both Profs Kuo-Wei Huang and Choon-Hong Tan. He then took on an adventure at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia where he did research, a MSc degree and helped setup a lab headed by Kuo-Wei Huang. Lured by better weather and wildlife, he chose to do his PhD and Postdoctoral stint under the auspices of Prof. Michelle L. Coote at the Australian National University.
